CHARACTER INFO
Name: Odile
Canon: In Stars and Time
Canon Point: End of Act 6
Age: 40s
Species: Human
History: Odile was born in Ka Bue to a Ka Buan father and a Vaugardian mother. Her mother, who had never wanted children, left when Odile was young. In Ka Bue Odile's appearance was foreign enough to make her feel like she didn't really belong. She lived most of her life feeling that way, until she happened to meet a Vaugardian merchant who told her about the Vaugardian tradition of Familytales- a book in which each generation of a family writes a story, adding to the book and passing it on to their children. The thought of that sort of living history, a physical connection to one's family and culture that Odile never had, struck her so hard that she started to cry.
With that newfound desire to learn about her history and find a connection to her mother's country, Odile left Ka Bue for Vaugarde. It was shortly after her arrival that the King started to freeze the country and everyone in it. His origins and his purpose were unknown, but everywhere his influence spread time stopped. At some point she happened to run into Mirabelle and Isabeau, who were on a mission to stop the King and save the country. She joined them, saying that "leaving the fate of a country to a bunch of young ones would give me an ulcer".
On their way to Dormont the team recruits Siffrin and takes in the preteen Bonnie. The game begins shortly after the team arrives in the town of Dormont, ready to fight the King.
Personality:
✽ What is your character's main motivation? What drives them and keeps them going?
Odile is driven primarily by her curiosity and a desire for knowledge. This is the frame of reference she uses to try to understand herself, by cultivating a thorough understanding of the country her mother came from. She doesn't just want to know the facts- she wants to get the varying perspectives of the people of Vaugarde and their opinions too.
✽ What is their biggest regret? Why?
By the end of the game Odile's biggest regret is her failure to reach out and help a friend in dire need of emotional support. She feels that she can relate the most to Siffrin, since they're both very private people who don't really talk about their feelings. Considering that, and as the adult of the group (no, the 20-somethings are definitely not adults), she feels that she of all people should have recognized Siffrin's abrupt shift in attitude as the cry for help that it was and gotten over her own hurt feelings to help him.
✽ What is their worst fear? Their greatest comfort?
Odile's greatest comfort is the rest of the party, which has become a family to her. She came to Vaugarde to learn about her biological family and ended up getting herself a new one in the process, and despite everything they make her feel like she finally belongs.
Her worst fear is heights. But after that, it's anything bad happening to her found family. She would do dreadful things to make sure they're all okay. Probably very illegal things.
✽ Top three strengths?
1. Odile is extremely perceptive. Small inconsistencies or odd details stick in her mind, and she's able to put things together much more quickly than most people. She's even able to figure out that Siffrin is looping if he lets just a few too many things slip.
2. She's mastered all three types of Craft. Which is an impressive achievement in-universe, but also indicates that she has the determination and grit to develop powers that are different or even counter to her own innate nature.
3. She has impressive self-control. Her poker face is great, as her expression barely changes through the entire game. She is one of the least emotionally reactive people in her group, and is happy to back off if the person she's talking to seems uncomfortable.
✽ Top three weaknesses?
1. Odile is not good at talking to people. She's uncomfortable with emotion, a bit too secretive, a bit too direct, and perhaps a little overbearing. When someone needs a friend to talk to, she is the last person you should choose.
2. She is the physically slowest member of the team.
3. She has an intense fear of heights. When they reached the top floor of the House she actually screamed.
✽ What was their last lie?
It's not necessarily an explicit lie, but a misunderstanding that she's encouraged in order to hide the truth. Isabeau assumed when they met that Odile had come to Vaugarde for research. She didn't want to explain her true reasons, and it became a running joke for her to let the others try to guess what subject she's researching.
